During this special commemoration of Israel’s 75 years of existence, we will be discussing why there is a need for a sovereign, independent state of Israel; the sacrifices of thousands of soldiers in the Israeli Defense Forces as well as that of thousands of victims of terrorism; and whether or not Israel has the determination, resolve and fortitude necessary to be able to withstand its many challenges today, on multiple fronts.

About the Speaker:  Efraim Inbar is the President of the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security. Professor Inbar was the founding director of the Begin-Sadat Center for Strategic Studies, a position he held for 23 years (1993-2016), and a professor of political studies at Bar-Ilan University. He has been a visiting professor at Georgetown, Johns Hopkins, and Boston universities; a visiting scholar at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars; a Manfred Warner NATO Fellow; and a visiting fellow at the (London-based) International Institute for Strategic Studies. He was president of the Israel Association of International Studies; a member of the Political Strategic Committee of the National Planning Council; chairman of the National Security Curriculum Committee in the Ministry of Education; and a member of the Academic Committee of the IDF History Department. If Israel is to prevent Iran from constructing nuclear weapons it must first deal with the threat from the north.

China’s Vision of a World Order – Global Security and Ukraine Initiatives as Case Studies

Alexander B. Pevzner

China’s recent initiatives for global security – including its mediation in the Saudi-Iran rapprochement and offering a position paper for a solution in Ukraine – demonstrate the strengthening of ties with Russia, and its outreach both to Europe and countries of the ‘Global South’ that would prefer to avoid aligning with the West on geopolitical issues. Hence, it is essential to delve deeper into the detailed “Global Security Initiative” to understand China’s vision for its preferred world order and the accompanying roadmap to get there. This article analyzes this initiative.

Out of the Rubble? Turkey’s Post-Quake Diplomacy and Regional Opening

Dr. Hay Eytan Cohen Yanarocak, Dr. Serhat S. Çubukçuoğlu (TRENDS)

Two powerful earthquakes that struck Turkey’s southeast on February 6, 2023, have taken an enormous toll on lives and livelihoods, putting aside the economic and social damage of epic proportions inflicted on the country. Apart from the ensuing chaotic political atmosphere ahead of the general election in May, the tragedy also has implications for foreign policy.

Israel should prepare for war – and politicians need to come to their senses

Israel should prepare for war –
and politicians need to come to their senses

A wake-up call from the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security
The struggle over legal reform has caused enormous damage to the State of Israel. On the political level, the image of American backing has been undermined (even if, in practice, the defense cooperation continues as usual). On the economic level, the country’s credit rating has eroded. The public discourse in Israel reached new heights of acerbity and alienation. Above all, national cohesion was cracked primarily due to the IDF being used as a tool in the political debate and the threats to dodge service.

Israel is seen from the outside as a torn society, gradually losing its ability to function. Friendly countries, among them those who signed the Abraham Accords and threw their weight behind Israel’s strategic presence in the region, look in astonishment at an internal conflict that indicates the State of Israel has domestic problems that could dismantle its military capability. According to Nasrallah’s “spider web” theory, Israel’s enemies are gaining confidence and expect the internal tensions in the Jewish state to lead to self-destruction.

All this happens when, due to regional and global balance changes, Israel’s strategic environment becomes more problematic and dangerous than it has been for decades. Iran displays greater self-confidence – due to the effective suppression of internal unrest and the strategic connection to Russia and China – which translates into agreements with Arab countries, primarily Saudi Arabia. Syria, Iran’s ally, is reaccepted by the Arab world. Beyond that, Tehran – which progresses toward accumulating fissile material for nuclear weapons – understands that the US is busy elsewhere (Ukraine and China) and is reducing its involvement in the Middle East. This reality also increases the freedom of action of Iran and its proxies to escalate military confrontation with Israel.

These changes create a different security reality. We have already experienced multi-front armed conflict in recent days, admittedly on a small scale. The chances of deterioration into a wider conflict are more significant today than before. Thus, Israel needs to prepare for the tangible possibility of war. Given Iran’s progress toward a nuclear arsenal, it is also possible that we will soon reach a point where there will be no avoiding attacking Iran, even without American assistance. Such an event could turn into a multi-front war.

It is incumbent upon Israel’s leaders from both sides of the political aisle to put aside their differences or quickly reach a compromise that will allow the country to focus on the existential security challenges that lie ahead. The State of Israel must adopt a new paradigm that prioritizes security needs over other legitimate needs. The IDF and all elements of the security establishment must be removed from the political discourse while condemning the threats to dodge service. In addition, elected officials must ensure that the IDF has the necessary resources to prepare for a war that may be inevitable.

The Latin proverb Si vis pacem, para bellum (If you want peace, prepare for war) is most appropriate at this time.

Rocket Attacks on Passover, Four Murdered. Is This the Season of Our Freedom?

Rocket Attacks on Passover, Four Murdered. Is This the Season of Our Freedom?
Just as the Passover holiday was underway last Thursday, a new wave of terror decended upon Israel. A barrage of rockets from Lebanon into Israel were launched on Thursday. Saturday night, a rocket attack was launched into Israel from Syria. Joy turned to fear as families fled their homes for shelters.
In a car-ramming late Friday in Tel Aviv, the alleged attacker rammed his vehicle into a group of civilians near a popular seaside park, police said. Israel’s rescue service said a 30-year-old Italian man, Alessandro Parini, was killed, while five other British and Italian tourists – including a 74-year-old man and a 17-year-old girl – were receiving medical treatment for mild to moderate injuries.
While travelling to Tiberias for a family trip, a terrorist shooting near a community in the Jordan Valley killed a family of three and turned into a frightening mob escalation. The Dee sisters, Rina (age 15) and Maia (age 20) were murdered. Their 45-year-old mother Lucy (Lucianne) was initially seriously wounded but sadly, died from her critical injuries today. The Dee family lived in Efrat.
Americans for a Safe Israel/AFSI extends its deepest condolences to the famlies and wishes a speedy recovery to those injured and traumatized by these terror attacks. May the families be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem and may they now only simchas.
Thousands March to Evyatar
Thousands of people, including at least eight government ministers and 20 Knesset members, participated in a march this afternoon to the community of Evyatar in Samaria.
„The government has yet to free itself of the shackles of foreign pressures,” responded Nachala Movement head Daniella Weiss, speaking on Kan Reshet Bet. „Maybe this march will be a form of therapy for the government, releasing it from the dictates of the United States and Europe. One of the downsides of having a right-wing government is that we don’t want to overthrow it,” she noted. „Who, on the Right, wants to return to the dark days of a government with Arabs and left-wingers?”
Despite the terrible wave of terror attack against Israel over the last several days, residents of Evyatar remain strong in their Zionist activism. It is only through the full force of the Zionist spirit, as demonstrated today, that the truth about Israel and what is legally and rightfully hers will prevail.
Israel Helps Re-Write the Holocaust
In March, Israeli Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau signed an agreement on “cooperation in the field of study visits of organized youth groups. This was after the Lapid government last August canceled the visits of Israeli schoolchildren to Poland that were scheduled for last September through November. Israel announced that the two sides had reached a dead-end regarding content and security. Lapid, who served as both PM and FM, said the visits had been canceled due to the Polish government’s demand to intervene in the content that would be presented to the participating youths.
Now an agreement has been reached and is only waiting to be ratified by the Knesset and the Polish Sejm. The deal will, in fact, expose Israeli schoolchildren to Poland’s version of what happened under six years of German occupation.
This agreement has 100%+ potential to desecrate the memory of the Holocaust, any sense of historical accuracy, any notion of decency and responsibility. Worse than this is that it desecrates the memory of the Six Million. We can only pray that common sense prevails and that this agreement is swiftly voted down and without any debate or hesitation.

Hello valdas,

Join the BZD and tour guide Evgenia Kempinski on a Virtual Tour of the Jews of Siberia. Siberia is a large region of Russia that extends from the Ural Mountains in the West to the Pacific Ocean in the East. Usually, it is only associated with frost, snow, prisons, and forests. The first Jews in Siberia were exiled from Moscow as early as the 17th century for political or criminal offenses. Some Jews came to Siberia by choice, trying to escape the pogroms and poverty of the Pale of Settlement. It’s hard to believe, but to bypass the official ban, some Jews got fake documents to state themselves as criminals sentenced to Siberian exile.
